The name Begoni refers to begonias, a mountain flower famous for both its gorgeous blooms and beautiful leaves. The executive chef, Jimmy Kwok, believes that the begonia flower is a representation of his unique blend of Vietnamese and French cooking traditions. He grew up in Hanoi, learning to cook from his mother and delivering catered food to international embassies. When Hanoi became too dangerous in 1977, Jimmy fled to Hong Kong and then ended up in Philadelphia. Soon after, he took a trip to San Francisco, and he’s been here ever since: “I am on a permanent vacation after 30 years,” he says.
